Yes, frozen turkey identity fraud…

November 22nd, 2007 · No Comments

A client just called me to inform me that she has been the victim of frozen turkey identity theft. A major grocery chain offers a “free” turkey to anyone who has purchased a certain amount of groceries the weeks before Thanksgiving through the use of a courtesy card account number that keeps track of the total amount of an individual’s purchases. When she went to collect her turkey she was informed by the management that it had already been claimed. The store manager investigated and found, through the use of their on premises video surveillance recordings, that someone had picked up a receipt that her daughter had inadvertently left while bagging her groceries and had presented himself with the receipt that had the customer number on it. That individual fraudulently represented himself as my client’s spouse and was given a free turkey.
