Go to college in Second Life?

November 29th, 2007 · No Comments

It appears possible to relive (or attend) college all over again in the 3-D emersive environment known as “Second Life“.

It appears that this simulation is not one of the many University campuses that exist on Second Life that are sponsored by actual institutes of higher learning, it is more of a game simulation site where individual avatars act as if they were living in an American university college campus.

I should mention that I am a member of the elected Executive Board of the Second Life Bar Association and I also maintain a small law office in Second Life. I am not there that often because I am exploring the barter economy of another emersive environment known as ATITD (A Tale in the Desert) which I discovered because it has a very popular wiki.

What is most interesting about Second Life is that one “owns” the IP rights to any creations one makes and also there is an economy based upon “virtual land” that is bought and sold by Linden Labs. ATITD is more of a barter economy that explores how exchange value arises in social groups based upon necessity and a system of rewards based upon the skill of the avatar player.

Stumble it!
